Another instance of consistency in the good patriots
The following is an extract of a letter just received by the southern mail--
"When it required the interest of a client, Dallas came forward a few days ago in the supreme court, to applaud and panegyrize the conduct of the late administration in the war with France. The warfare de la Grand Republique, he discovered, was unjust, impolitic, predatory, and dastardly. They had not courage (he said) to war upon our fleets and armies, but let loose their fleets of pirates to prey upon the weak and defenceless merchant, while pursuing an innocent and honorable commerce. On the other hand, (said this Proteus) view the glorious course of our administration; fired with just indignation against the authors of those degrading injuries, they did not hesitate, but appealing to Heaven, resolved to redress their own wrongs; not upon the individual, but against the nation, did they make war; and even mark the justice which governed them against those ships alone which were found to have committed acts of hostility or aggression--This, gentlemen, was just, was great, was magnanimous, was worthy that nation, whose interests they ought to promote; whose honor was in their hands--Now had any one brought to his view the pages of the Aurora, for more than two years filled with scurrilous invective against the administration for this very magnanimous conduct, do you think he would have blushed? If you think so you do not know Mr. Dallas."
