This day I received your load of lime, by your lad aged about fifteen years, and paid him for it,—he called it twenty eight bushels;—as we sometimes measure wood and weigh bread in Philadelphia, I thought I might, for once, without giving offence, measure your lime; accordingly I proposed to your boy to do it—he did not like my proposal very well, but was forced to submit, as the pile did not look like over-measure rather than do it, he offered to abate two bushels, but I could not agree to that, as it was not a fair way, to take any of your lime for nothing. So at it we went, and every time we filled we asked the boy, if there was too much, and when he said there was, we struck off till he was satisfied, and the whole was measured.
The quantity, by strict measure, was nineteen bushels and a half, and I paid him for twenty one and a half, supposing that one bushel might fly off or waste in the road.
The boy stared, and I believe wondered to see us measure his lime, and we all stared and wondered too; not less than six or seven of us that were present. We parted however without many words and the only objection he made was that we measured by a half bushel, I did not mind that much, nor did I, as I intended to write to you on the subject, regard him much when he said he would tell his
DADDY.
P. S. You will excuse my not mentioning your name in the news paper at length.

Recipient
Mr. [Unnamed Lime Supplier]
Main Argument
the delivered lime was significantly short of the claimed 28 bushels, measuring only 19.5, though paid for 21.5 to cover potential waste; the measurement process was fair and surprised the delivery boy.
