STATE JEALOUSY

The fate of almost all the nations which have been made up of confederate states, ought to warn the leaders of opposition not to give their countenance too much to faction.
It cannot be denied that state jealousy, or a state independency, has been played off by the federal party, very much to the benefit of the enemy: and this circumstance has led us to reflect upon the subject.
State jealousies ruined the Greeks:
The Roman government did not admit of independent states within the limits of the republic or the empire. And, perhaps, to this consolidation of jurisdiction the duration of twelve centuries of power which the Romans experienced, is to be attributed.
The Italians, after the Romans, were perpetually agitated by state jealousies: and when has there been a time that they have not been invaded and conquered?
What is the present state of Germany, after being so long worried by state jealousies?
France was a scene of desolation when her provinces claimed a sort of independence.
England was nothing, before the Heptarchy:
And she would never have been Great, if Scotland and Ireland had not been united to her.
What have become of the states of Italy, and all their state jealousies?
Spain was torn to pieces, and the victim of every invader, until the union of Ferdinand and Isabella.
These facts are cited, not to inculcate the propriety of consolidating all our minor governments into one: but to impress the federal leaders with the necessity of a little more moderation, and to induce them to harmonize more with the administration. In case of the destruction of our federal government, what would they have to gain? Literally nothing: for however ambition may employ parties to mount to power, it never fails to crush all parties in the end. This has been woefully verified in France. Where are the Jacobins, the Constitutionalists, the Girondists, the Robespierrans now? All gone, and scarcely talked of.
As Napoleon, by the last English accounts, has been driven from Moscow, and is in danger of utter ruin, it is to be hoped the tories will now cease their clamor about his conquering the world. And as it is in such a sad plight, it is to be expected that the New England clergy will no longer fear for the safety of the craft.
The report from Washington is that Gen. Armstrong, of New York, was taken into the administration as War Secretary, and Capt. Jones, of Philadelphia, as Secretary of the Navy Department. If the report be true, we may expect soon to see it Gazetted.

Key Arguments

State Jealousies Have Historically Ruined Confederate Nations Like The Greeks, Italians, Germans, And French Provinces. Roman Longevity Attributed To Consolidated Jurisdiction Without Independent States. England's Greatness From Uniting With Scotland And Ireland; Spain's From Ferdinand And Isabella's Union. Federal Leaders Should Moderate And Harmonize With Administration To Avoid Destruction. Ambition Crushes Parties, As Seen In France With Jacobins, Girondists, Etc. Napoleon's Retreat From Moscow Should End Tory Clamor. Expected Cabinet Appointments: Armstrong As War Secretary, Jones As Navy Secretary.
