Bayonet Practice Gives Newness to Camp Life

Camp Lewis, Oct. 9. - Drill routine at Camp Lewis took on a more martial aspect today when many of the companies were put through bayonet practice. Foot movements were given first, the men jumping to the right and left, advancing and retreating, all the time keeping off an imaginary enemy with imaginary bayonets. At the termination of these movements the men rushed forward in a simulated charge cheering loudly. Drill, which was interrupted by the speech of Secretary McAdoo, who explained the soldiers' and sailors' insurance law, was taken up after dinner. Between 25,000 and 30,000 men were on the parade ground. There are now approximately 16,600 men of the 18,000 men of the third quota in camp. The total of drafted men at Camp Lewis is 37,000.
