General GAGE's Answer to the Address of the Inhabitants of MONTREAL, inserted in this Paper of the 2d Instant.

Gentlemen,

The Address which you presented to me on the melancholy News we have just received, deserves my most sincere Thanks. The Loss of a King whose Actions during his whole Reign tended to the Welfare and Happiness of his People, cannot be felt without Grief; and Gratitude inspires us to reverence his Memory for ever. He has left the Throne to a young Prince, from whom we are well grounded to expect great Things. Educated under the Princess, who, more than Woman, is Blessed with Qualities that set her above her own Sex, imbibed the Principles of Virtue, Justice, Piety, Wisdom and Moderation; what must we not hope from a Monarch thus formed. Persuade yourselves that he will tread in the Steps of his glorious Ancestors, that the Mildness of his Government will be diffused on all his Subjects. I cannot but feel the highest Pleasure at your approving of my Conduct. You may rely on me whenever it will be in my Power to promote your Happiness; and if there be an opportunity I will omit Nothing that may contribute to make you a flourishing and happy People.
