Four new social centers will be opened next month under the direction of the school board, according to the fall and winter program issued by the board Saturday.
The centers will be located at the remodeled Bay View fire house, the Garden Homes school, Prairie St. school and the Lincoln Ave., school.
The total number of centers in Milwaukee will then be 16.
Announcement has been made that the Lapham Park social center is being moved temporarily to 9th and Sherman Sts. The old building will be remodeled and enlarged. The Lapham Park club and athletic department will be transferred to the 4th St., school for a time.
Activities in the various night schools and social centers will open Sept. 16. Principals and social center directors will be in their offices every night next week for consultation and enrollment.
Social center and athletic activities will begin Sept. 20.
Two night high schools will be conducted during the fall and winter months, one at the South Division high school, where commercial subjects will be taught and the other at the West Division high school, where high school subjects will be the rule. Special classes for adults desiring to study, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade subjects will also be held at each of the schools.
One of the features of the work to be done at the West Division high school is the class to be organized in lip reading for the deaf and hard of hearing.
