Whigs of Massachusetts.

The Whigs of this State have completed their organization by the appointment of the Whig State Committee. As soon as the elections are over they intend to prepare an elaborate address to the Whigs of the Union, presenting a platform broad enough for the Whigs of all parts of the country to stand upon.

Two hundred and twenty one of the most prominent of the party have made a brief address to the Whig voters of Massachusetts, in which they state that the time has arrived for a re organization of the Whig Party, National and State. This movement, they think, can be begun no where with more propriety than in Massachusetts, where Whig principles so long flourished and where the policy of the Whig party so long prevailed and produced such good results.

The committee will soon open a correspondence with Whigs in other parts of the country. They will not support Gov. Banks in their election, on account of his removal of Judge Lorino. They say.

"In view of the policy and conduct of the present State Administration, especially towards the Judiciary-respect for which has ever been a cardinal doctrine in the Whig creed-we cannot but consider it a para mount duty of the Whigs of Massachusetts to throw their votes in the way most likely to defeat the election of the candidates of the Republican party"

This address is signed by such men as Wm Appleton, George R Curtis, G S. Hillard. Leverett Saltonstall, George Lunt, William Aspinwall, and others known to fame as sound conservative, national men.—They do not mean to join in the eternal and never-ending crusade against institutions which do not concern them. The Hon Robert C Winthrop last year refused to support Gov Banks on account of his course towards the judiciary

Event Details

Whigs in Massachusetts appoint a state committee, plan an elaborate address to Whigs nationwide on a broad platform, and 221 prominent members issue an address calling for national and state party reorganization, starting in Massachusetts. They oppose supporting Gov. Banks over his removal of Judge Lorino, viewing it as disrespectful to the judiciary, a core Whig principle. The committee will correspond with Whigs elsewhere. Signers include conservative national figures who reject crusades against unrelated institutions. Robert C. Winthrop previously refused support for similar reasons.
