By letters from Newburyport we learn,
that the Selectmen adopted a new and unprecedented principle in the manner of voting in that town. Our letters inform us,
that the Selectmen, as the votes came in,
took them up, and read them aloud to the
meeting, thus doing away the intent of balloting; which is, that every man should
vote his own sentiments, without the possibility to being biased. It is said that
more than one hundred Republican votes
were lost by this manner of proceeding!
Will the votes of that town under these
circumstances, be considered as legally given
in?
