Cheaper Turkeys and More Money Make for Great Thanksgiving Day
New York, Nov. 22.-(U.P.) Thousands of American families who could afford only roast beef last Thanksgiving will celebrate with champagne and caviar this year, a nation-wide survey by the United Press showed tonight. General wage increases, increased dividends, re-employment and returning prosperity are contributing to make this the most luxurious Thanksgiving holiday since 1928. Prices are generally lower and tremendous increases were expected in sales of turkey, stuffings, wines, fruits, candies, delicacies and alcoholics.
Thousands of homeless will enjoy the holiday with "sit-down" dinners of turkey donated by public and private organizations, instead of chicken or beef as in former years. Despite the maritime strike, Pacific Coast reported increased Thanksgiving business. Retailers in Los Angeles anticipated the largest trade in years with a marked increase of luxury goods. Turkeys and chicken prices ranged from 24 to 29 cents a pound compared with 30 to 38 cents last year. Hollywood prepared to eat high. The Salvation Army said the soup and kitchen lines were decreasing and that more family type cases would be handled.
The price of dressed turkeys varied throughout the country at from 19 to 25 cents in Dallas, Tex., to as high as 25 to 31 cents in Tulsa, Okla., with a price of 22 cents in many important cities. In Seattle, Wash., where a cargo of turkeys bound for Alaska was

dropped because of the shipping strike, prices tumbled.
Luxurious sales of high priced wines, liquors and such luxury foods as caviar, pate de foie gras, truffles are reported from all cities. Chicago reported fruit sales 20 per cent higher and some wines and liquors gained 200 per cent.
