The Response.—The Columbus State Journal, the leading Whig paper in Ohio, in its response to Mr. Clay's pronunciamento, remarks as follows. The Journal goes for Corwin:
"He cannot be President, because the people will not elect him. He is not the man for Young America. He is in the shade of that light of glorious freedom, which has dawned upon this people and this age. He does not belong to the new generation. He belongs to the 'party of recurrence to the past,' and not to the 'party of progress.' The elections in Ohio, New York and Massachusetts, settled this much as to the next Presidency—no man who is not out and out opposed to the extension of slavery, or of making any territory hereafter to be acquired free territory, can be elected President of these United States."
