Fishing About Over

The fishing season closed this week around Kodiak Island, but if the escapement at the Karluk weir continues to be good, the Karluk area may open again for September, Mark Meyer, Fish and Wildlife agent said yesterday.

The season will re-open on September 10 for the remainder of the month, but only two or three canneries around the island will pack then.

Kodiak was full of departing fishermen and cannery workers this week, as they left on the Denali and aboard chartered planes.

The local Whiz Fish Cannery sent all its outside help home, but the locally hired help will be available in case the season is re-opened.

The tender Ambassador and its crew are leaving for Puget Sound, and the Panther is going to Pelican where Whiz has another cannery, but will be back for the September season.

Mr. Meyer said that the total pack for the island is approximately 500,000 cases, as compared with 601,000 for the same period last year.
