Full Text

Says a correspondent--The great sources from whence all crimes originate are poverty and idleness--Poverty, by depriving people of their share of the necessaries of life, and consequently throwing temptations in the way of wretchedness, which it has not the constancy to resist;--and idleness, by giving room for the operation of passions which naturally lead to the commission of crimes, and which induce them to take from the possession of others what they wanted the industry to procure themselves. The views of legislators should be, to destroy these sources, and thereby have the fewer vices to punish. If parents, without distinction, were compelled to put their children to learn some profession, it would serve to obviate the miseries to which the poor are so frequently subjected, and would afford a certain and happy refuge to those in better circumstances, from whom Fortune might withdraw her favours.
