Racism Poses Challenge To Church--Oxnam

BUCK HILL FALLS, Pa.—(ANP)

Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam of the Methodist Church told a group of denominational leaders from 12 eastern states here last week that racial segregation poses a fundamental test for religion in the United States.

The bishop underscored his statement with a warning that a Christian approach must be found to the problem. He said:

'In the field of race, bitterness is present. The clear violation of law is practiced and within the church itself there is serious division.

'A large unifying concept must be found. It lies in the Christian conception of a common Father.'

Bishop Oxnam is president of the Methodist Church's Council of Bishops.
