WHAT RESEARCH HAS DONE
The quiet scientist working peacefully in his laboratory may not seem to some people to be engaged in very dramatic labors. Yet the work of scientists and technicians and inventors has revolutionized life in this country.
It is pointed out that as the result of inventions, scientific discoveries and developments, 15,000,000 persons have had jobs recently that did not exist at the beginning of this century. This is about one third the number of people employed in 1939.
Thus the work of these patient people of genius is constantly opening up new possibilities for human comfort and service. They created the great automobile industry, which employs a large fraction of the American people. The colleges that devote money and the time of their men to scientific research perform a great service to humanity. The same is true of industrial and various companies that specialize in such research.
