SPRING OPENINGS.
Bit of Philosophy on Female Attire.

A sweet consolation is being enjoyed now by the fair sex, that Lenten season is over. They are now released from the obligation to 'mortify the flesh' in the matter of attire. The modistes, milliners and other caterers to feminine taste for adornment, are displaying their Spring goods and fashions in full bloom, and deplorable indeed must be the disposition of the lady who can make a tour of the shops without learning anew that life is well worth living. The occasion is not, however, one of unmixed joy. Not many purses can respond to all demands made by delighted eyes, and even the owners of the few that can are to be profoundly pitied, for the most industrious dressing, by a woman who can give her entire time to it, cannot find place for all the pretty things that are offered. The men who pay the bills may not be in a proper frame of mind to appreciate the difference in this respect between now and 20 years ago, but to other men—to the bachelors who can enjoy the spectacle of a parlor full of well-dressed women without suffering any of the responsibilities—the improvement in feminine decoration is as wonderful as it is delightful. It is true, too, although paterfamilias cannot be made to believe it, that a discreet woman can now dress handsomely at a far less cost than she could have done in the days when there was but little variety in materials, and when the range of accessories was so limited that a very small shop could include all. Instead of groaning over the Spring openings, the sensible family man will invite his wife and daughters to visit them all and improve their taste by seeing all that can be seen, so that when the inevitable purchases are made they will bring with them at least the consolation that the new attire will be worth all that it costs.
