SOCIAL DEMANDS OF HASKELL STUDENTS
A student who either graduates or leaves Haskell before graduation must be able to apply some of his learning. He must have the capacity to think out certain problems which will confront him the moment he leaves the campus gates. There will be no teacher or friend to advise him whether a certain decision is right or wrong. He must be able to meet people with ease. He must have developed what qualities of leadership he has in order to appreciate the superior leadership of others. He must be able to transact some business accurately without guessing at the outcome. He must be wide-awake to both local and State governments if he expects to live under a republican form of government. If Communism and Sovietism are to be held in proper check in this country, he must become a property holder. He must know the value of recreation and the stimulation which comes to him as an individual by engaging in some sport which he likes for the sake of himself.
He must make plans for the establishment of a home somewhere before old age creeps upon him. He must become identified with some church in order to co-operate with others to make the world a better place in which to live. He must prepare a code of ethics by which he should expect to live and die. This is a large order to hand to each student who will soon be leaving Haskell. It is true that not all is demanded the moment the Haskellite leaves the schoolroom, but the time is short, indeed, for in many cases within a month after school days are over these life plans should be made.
