Full Text

The administration is in luck just now. It is but a week since Hayes won a victory over Conkling, and here comes a second administration victory, Schurz over Sheridan Sherman and the army officers. The House voted, by a majority of thirteen, against the proposal to turn over the Indian Bureau to the War Department. For several weeks the papers were filled with open letters from the Secretary of the Interior and Sherman and his followers on this question. It was a regular war of words. The fight is, happily, over at last, and Schurz has come out completely victorious. The Indians will still draw rations from the agencies, and will not be handed over to the tender mercies of our troops.
