IDLE DREAMS
The moments flit like shining through,
Aglow for very pleasure;
The hours hymn by on golden wings
In sweet, slow-moving measure,
Day, loltering, careless, round her brings,
Her regal store of treasure,
And night in softest cadence sings
The song of happy leisure ;
Life's richest wine in sparkling beads,
From out Time's cup is flowing;
And eager thought to thought succeeds,
Inspired by its glowing;
Long-silent powers call for deeds
To thrill them into growing,
And soundless voices hint the needs.
Fair Honor is bestowing.
O strong armed Present! leaning back
In listless indecision,
And idly peering down Life's track
Where glows some dream Elysian;
Reach forth! transform to living fact
Each haunting, hope-born vision,
Compel the Future, by thine act,
To yield thee proud submission.
