ON SKY-BLUE SEVERN'S TIDE.
BY E. S. RILEY, JR.
Afloat! afloat! in fairy boat,
On swelling stream we glide,
Our songs run high as swift we fly,
On sky-blue Severn's tide;
For our glad hearts are true and free,
And life is full of hope and glee,
As hie we on all merrily,
On sky-blue Severn's tide.
A sail! a sail! the waving gale,
As on the wave we ride,
Bends low the masts in its wild blasts.
On sky-blue Severn's tide;
And angry waves their foamings now
Throw wildly o'er our vessel's prow,
As to the storm our strained masts bow,
On sky-blue Severn's tide
We fly! we fly! the waves leap high
What care we in our pride
For woman's gaze speaks thoughts of praise,
On sky-blue Severn's tide.
She watches with a glad, proud eye,
The fairy boat that passes by,
Blessing the hearts that in it fly,
On sky-blue Severn's tide.
And harm! and harm! we dare the storm!
On crested wave we ride!
Its billows' height is our delight,
On sky-blue Severn's tide.
Spread out the sheet! make fast the rope!
We will with ariel spirits cope
Hurrah! we're free as heaven's scope,
On sky-blue Severn's tide!
