Full Text

Recognition of Filibusterdom.

One of the most important items of news by the last steamer, is the recognition of the Rivas-Walker government in Nicaragua, by the President. The statesmanship of Marcy was of too high an order to lend its countenance to the dangerous measure. But his opposition was of little avail, when the Cincinnati Convention demanded a sacrifice, no matter what, for the benefit of the President. South, the announcement of the event seems to have been well received, though many prominent politicians in that quarter, were opposed to dabbling in the filibuster affair. But north, among the masses, the course of the President is much censured. In the present somewhat complicated state of our relations with England, it was certainly not the part of prudence to involve the nation in more difficulties.

Perhaps, considering the desperate strait to which Franklin Pierce is driven, in view of the Convention ahead, some foolhardy step on his part may serve to attach one more vote to his name, and if so, in the usual prefatory language of an author, "he will feel that his labors have not verily been spent in vain." Somebody has very appropriately said of the act, that "it came too late for the Cincinnati Convention, and too soon for history."
