SHEPHERDSTOWN, VA.
SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 1857.

Lively.

Last week our town was quite enlivened and animated by the Fair, and the May Parties that occurred on Friday and Saturday last. The Fair was well patronized and we understand did well. At the May Parties the children seemed to enjoy themselves happily. But now the Fair has closed and all the May Parties are over and the old town has relapsed into its usual monotony and "hum drum" life. Can't something be done soon to enliven it?

The following beautiful lines are dedicated to the Queen of the May party given on last Friday by the Rev. J. L. Frary's School:-

For the Register.

THE FEAST OF CHLORIS.

The charming Queen, Chloris gay sovereign of Flowers,
Late held royal gala, in bright vernal bowers:
So gentle in manner and graceful in mien,
No Sylph could have vied with the fair floral Queen.

Her Majesty! radiant in beauty Divine;
(Though crowned with sweet lilies, and buds of the vine)
So lustrous; required no pearls to impart
One charm, to a wreath of rare gems of the heart.

Her smiles on the Fete, fair dame nature bestowed,
The blue vaulting ether, with Sol brightly glowed;
(Though lately not many such favors he showed,)
And Ceres, and Nomius; most willingly came,
With all the celestials, to honor the Dame.

The trio of Graces! the exquisite Nine,
All tendered their gifts to a Queen so divine
And beautiful Nymphs' came all in a glow:
Lugging their 'Urns,' with pure waters of snow.

And bright 'Cupid boys' too, all joyous were seen;
(Love's corps of young Tutelars,) skipping the green:
And dignified Matrons, there smiled in their prime,
At thoughts of the May-Queens,' they were, in their time.

Ah! who but the cynical snarl at such sights?
Of groups of young innocents, gay with delights?
May vision ne'er give us worse scenes to deplore,
Than mirth on a green sward instead of a floor:

Or, look upon things of more mischievous power,
Than young happy faces, and old ones not sour.
