LEGISLATIVE ITEMS.

On the 9th inst., the Senate decided the contested seat case, and gave Jordan (whig) the seat. This gives the whigs one majority in that branch.

On the 10th the House passed a joint resolution to adjourn on the 23d.

House file No. 5, a bill to suppress intemperance came up on its third reading and passed by the following vote: Ayes 35, Nays 32. Nearly all the whigs voting for it and the democrats in opposition.

On the 11th the same bill was taken up in the Senate, read twice by its title, and referred to the select committee on that subject. Its passage by the Senate is considered doubtful.

The bill for an act to relocate the seat of Government was taken up in the Senate and passed by the following vote: Ayes—Anderson, Coolbaugh, Coon, Hamilton, Hillis, Jordan, Love, Lucas, McCulloch, McCrary, McEachran, Park, Ramsey, Saunders, Schramm, Thurston, Test, Udell and Mr. President—19.

Nays—Birge, Browning, Clark, Cleaver, Fulton, Matthews, Needham, Preston, Shields, Wilkinson and Workman—11.

On the 12th the Senate took up the joint resolution passed by the House, to adjourn on the 23d, which on the final vote was lost.

The bill for the repeal of all usury laws was postponed until the 4th of July next by the following vote—Ayes 15, Nays 14, which settles that question for the present session.

A friend writing to us from Iowa City, says:

"The Locos say Harlan is not legally and constitutionally chosen—but I do not believe that they will seriously urge it when the excitement dies away, and they cool down to temperate heat.

Quite a number of Democrats, in and out of the Legislature, condemn the course of the party. It was no doubt a deliberate plan formed by a part of the members of that party, in both branches of the Assembly, with the intention of thwarting the wishes of the majority of the people of Iowa, fairly expressed through the ballot box—anti-democratic and revolutionary in its tendency, and ought to, and will be, rebuked by every honest and patriotic man in the State.

This high-handed measure, "conceived in iniquity and brought forth in sin," must re-act with tremendous force, and fall with crushing weight on the heads of its perpetrators, and the party which they represent. I assure you this act has given sham Democracy a severe and stunning blow on one hand, while on the other it has brought union and harmony to the true Whig party; and we are now better united and are stronger than we ever were in Iowa. It would do you good to witness the good feeling and high spirits of every Whig here, and their name is legion.

There is a strong, (universal I might say) desire on the part of the Whigs to come square on the platform, to old land marks, cast strange gods to the bats and moles, and once more under the ample folds of our glorious and time honored banner go forth to battle and glorious victory."
