Lanier High School band was among the four bands voted a superior rating in the 1962 State Band Festival held at Jackson State College in April.
To get the superior rating Lanier was adjudged superior in marching and concert performance, and received an excellent rating in sight-reading.
This marked the second year in succession that Lanier has received the top rating in state competition.
Prior to the state contest the Lanier band, which numbers 52 in the concert unit and 68 in the marching unit, was the only group to be rated superior in the district contest at Ackerman, Mississippi.
The three other bands that received superior rating in the state contest are Brinkley of Jackson; Oak Park, Laurel; and Alexander of Brookhaven.
Mr. Kermit Holly, Sr., often referred to as "dean" of band instructors of the state because he helped train so many, has been instructor of band at Lanier for many years.
