THE RAILROADS EXPLAIN.

Why They Did Not Remove Crossings As Required By Law.

The railroad commissioners yesterday examined the replies from the New York & New England, the Central New England & Western and the Housatonic railroads, to their recent inquiries as to why the roads had not complied with the law in removing one grade crossing a year for each stated length of road in the state.

General Manager Howard of the New York & New England railroad replies that the company intended to remove the Bank street and Riverside street crossings at Waterbury, but has been delayed by the act of the legislature which provides for a union depot, which may alter the grades. The company is also considering the removal of the grade crossings at Cottage street, Danielsonville, and one near Osborn in East Windsor.

Superintendent Opdyke of the Central New England & Western road, said his company considered that the changes at Hoskins station in Simsbury were a full compliance with the law.

Vice President Stevenson of the Housatonic railroad gave the reply that the company intends to remove the grade crossing at North avenue, Bridgeport. If the city will bear part of the expense, work will quickly be begun.

No action regarding these replies has yet been taken by the commissioners, owing to the illness of Commissioner Woodruff. The letters have been forwarded to Mr. Woodruff at Litchfield.
