STRESMANN

Gustav Stresemann, late foreign minister of Germany, is more deserving of an honorable niche in history than any other non-Socialist statesman who has been active in world affairs since the war. He not only had the will to create peaceful conditions, but he was honest. He was like Ramsay MacDonald in that it was well known and understood that he did not merely mouth phrases of peace, at the same time holding a dagger up his sleeve, but that he meant what he said and could therefore be trusted.

Sometimes we thought he was too lenient toward the allied vultures, giving in to too many of their demands. It is a pity that he had to pass from the scene just when MacDonald's rise to semipower has changed the entire world spirit. We hope a Socialist may be selected as his successor, that there may be no deterioration of spirit in the international relations which have been improving.
