Among the most potent enemies of American democracy are
those who promote and practice race and religious prejudice, segregation,
and discrimination here. These are evils that undermine
the structure of our political, economic, and industrial institutions; they are termites attempting to destroy the splendid foundations of freedom, justice, equity, and opportunity upon which
this nation is built. Although opposition against these internal
enemies is growing, certain incidents in various states, heretofore
believed to be improving in race relations, indicate that the evils
are represented in many sections of our land, and show that we
must be vigilant, and courageous in our determination to defeat
them.
Efforts to promote race prejudice, segregation and discrimination
are stupid and are bound to give way before the growing
and intelligent opposition to them.
Leading and influential Americans, north and south, leading
and influential newspapers and other journals, radio programs
and enlightened courts are vocal and constructive protagonists for
justice, opportunity and fair play for everybody.
The internal enemies of our democracy, especially those who
assume to be loyal citizens, play directly into the hands of communists.
And the communistic world takes advantage of the sordid activities of our citizens who act contrarily to their avowals of
American Democracy.
As a matter of fact, these internal enemies of democratic life
happiness, hiding behind democratic preaching and democratic
political platforms must be restrained, if we are to expect the progress of our constitutional liberties and the success of the philosophy and faith of the people of all races and creeds in our really
great country.
