THE GAZETTE.
Portland. Monday, December 31, 1798.
The foreign news given in detail this day, will be found highly interesting. It augurs favourable to the rapid diminution of French power, and French intrigue. The disasters of Buonaparte—the destruction of his transports—the opposition to France by Malta—and the destruction of the Brest fleet, are among the most prominent articles. The tedious Congress of Rastadt seems drawing to a close, and the crisis is at hand for an insulted world dreadfully to avenge the unnumbered crimes of peace-destroying Frenchmen.
The local matters in this day's Gazette, are well worth attention.
THE YEAR,
Which ends this day, hath been replete with the most astonishing vicissitudes, that have for ages arrested the attention of man. Future generations will doubt the veracity of the historian, and scarcely credit the events which mark the close of the eighteenth century.
The United States of America now rank high in the scale of nations; and, having shaken off their foreign connections, may they ever remain the free, Sovereign, and independent EMPIRES OF THE WEST.
