A. M. Cummings Asks Questions About Latter's "Progressive" Views.
LANSING, Oct. 6.—A. M. Cummings talked to a large crowd in Lansing last night. He referred to the record of Rep. Sam Smith, his opponent, who delivered a speech in Oxford, Monday night, claiming his acts in public life proved he was a progressive. Cummings said on 20 separate roll calls on questions where lines were drawn clearly between progressive and reactionary tendencies Smith and Rep. Payne voted together.
"No one will deny," Cummings continued, "that Rep. Payne is a stand-patter.
"How does it happen, Mr. Smith, that you indorsed Burrows for re-election against Townsend.
"If you are progressive, who, pray, do you put in the stand-pat class? Do you name Mr. Denby as one? If so, what difference do you find between him and you, except that he has the courage to stand by his guns and meet defeat with flag unfurled, while you haven't?"
