The debate on the Statehood Bill in the Senate turned on the question of Mormonism in New Mexico and Arizona. Mr. Dubois, of Idaho, and Mr. Rawlins, of Utah, declared that wherever the Mormon church exists it takes part in politics. Both speakers asserted that a member of the Mormon church would not think of seeking public office without previously securing the sanction of the first presidency of the church. Mr. Dubois asserts that the sentiment against church domination in politics is growing strong in those States where the Mormon church has branches.
