Full Text

Morals of the Duke of Wellington.—Among the curious extracts in the London papers recently received by the Editor of the N. Y. American—are some from a pamphlet, by Mr. W. L. Wellesley, addressed to Lord Eldon, consisting of letters between Mr W. and the Duke of Wellington: of which, the object is to affix the charge of double dealing and insincerity upon the Duke. Mr Wellesley is a nephew of the Duke, and husband of the celebrated and wealthy Miss Tilney Long, whom, by his cruel and profligate conduct, he brought to a premature grave. after having first dissipated her property. The Lord Chancellor had, upon the application of the sisters of his wife, determined that he should not, owing to his character, have charge of his own children; and it was in relation to this matter that the correspondence between the uncle and nephew took place. One sentence only, from a letter of Mr Wellesley to the Duke, conveys (to those who know something of the history of their family) a finely ironical reflection—“ Is it not strange,”—says he, “that I alone should be held up to popular odium, and be denied the common rights that belong to me as a father and a son, whilst I feel and know myself to be as moral a man as any of the members of my family.”
