Chest Checks Sent To Nine Agencies
J. J. Trevor, treasurer of the Key West Community Chest, has announced that checks have gone out to the nine participating agencies of the Chest - the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Community Servicemen's Center through the U. S. O., Girl Scouts, Juvenile Council, N. C. C. S., Salvation Army, U. S. O., and Youth Center.
During the recent campaign, a total of $38,373.18 was contributed by the people of this community.
Trevor explained that part of this was in cash and part in pledges to be paid during the coming year, and this total represents approximately 70 per cent of the budgets of these agencies.
Consequently each agency must curtail its proposed activities this year in order to operate within their reduced budgets.
The total amount of money will be turned over to these nine agencies in quarterly installments during the next 12 months, and checks covering the first quarter have already been issued.
Trevor said that at the end of each quarter the agencies turn in a financial report covering the preceding quarter, and upon receipt of these reports the Community Chest Board then issues the checks for the next quarter, and so on throughout the year.
Although the 1956-57 drive showed only a very slight increase in collections - just $19.37 over the previous year, reduced campaign costs have made possible the payment of somewhat larger amounts to each of the participating agencies this year.
In closing, Trevor again expressed the Board's appreciation to everyone who helped in the campaign, and especially to Fred J. Dion whose generous contribution of office space for Headquarters meant a substantial saving in expenses, and consequently more money for the operation of the Chest agencies, whose youth and welfare services are so important to the community.
