Colorful Navy Day Program

IN ONE OF the most colorful Navy Day ceremonies ever held in Seattle, almost the entire membership of Seattle's All-Navy VFW Post 3469 was sworn into the Naval Reserve October 27.

The ceremony, presided over by Vice Admiral J.B. Oldendorf, Commander of the Western Sea Frontier, and highlighted by the appearance of General Mark Clark, was a stirring testimonial to the Veterans of Foreign Wars' mandate of building the reserve forces of the nation's military units. Upper photo shows an over-all view as Admiral Oldendorf spoke to the reserves after swearing them in. Lower picture shows a close-up of the ceremony as the post members, right hands upraised became the first post in the nation to join en masse a reserve organization. Directed by William N. Donaldson, Captain of All-Navy Post, the program was attended by upwards of 1,000 people who jammed the Naval-Marine Corps Reserve Armory in Seattle. Guests for the ceremony included Roscoe "Torchy" Torrance, Seattle Police Department Patrol Division Chief Philip D. Batson, Othel Schmoe, Second District Commander, Mrs. Lora Waters, Second District Auxiliary President, John Cartano, Navy League secretary, King County Sheriff Harlan S. Callahan, Harry Hendricks, state commander of the Disabled American Veterans and Robert A. Yothers, state senior vice Commander of the VFW. Second District Posts and Auxiliaries lent color to the program with a flag ceremony for the swearing-in part of the program.
