The Register "Dragooning its Forces into the Support of Mr. McRae."

Our cotemporary of the Register has a peculiar way of promoting harmony among its friends.—Having failed in its efforts to induce the Whigs and Know Nothings to haul down their flag and go for a Democratic disorganizer for Governor, and having refused at the request of the Elizabeth City Sentinel, to call for a meeting of the Know Nothing Executive Committee to take steps for organizing the party, and having been censured for its disorganizing conduct, that paper now comes forward to substitute its own will for the action of the Committee, and to ridicule Mr. Mann, of the Sentinel, because he has had the boldness to call for a Convention.—The Register says:

"To speak a la Ecosse, Maister Monn, o' the American Sintiril hae ganged clean daft abune a Convintion. 'Naething but a convintion will Maister Monn discoorse abune. Why the de'il doe's na'the mon ca'on Maister Meeler? Maixter Meeler is the head o'the Exicutive Commettie, and kens a'abune what suld be done in sic a case. Ca on Maiater Meeler, brither Monn, ca'on him by a means, and he'll just tell ye cannilly a'abuue it."

We do not pretend to translate this Scotch-Irish; but we believe the meaning of it is that Mr. Mann is very presumptuous in attempting to preserve his party organization, while Mr. Miller is referred to, not in such terms as the Register would have employed if that paper had been sure of his friendship and co-operation in its present movements. The Register's first excuse, in reply to Mr. Mann, was that the Editor did not know the names of the Committee; now he is referred to Mr. Miller, who is the Chairman. We congratulate our cotemporary on his discovery. Mr. Miller is the Chairman, but who are the other members of the Committee? The Register, it is apparent, does not care,—it is all the same to him who is or who is not on the Committee, or whether there is any Committee at all, or it is plain that he has made up his mind to ignore its authority and disregard its action.

Who invested the Raleigh Register with authority to transfer the Whigs and Know Nothings of this State to the support of a Democratic renegade for Governor? If the "American" party has ceased to exist as an organized party, whose duty and whose province is it to announce the fact? Is it not the duty—is it not the right of the State Executive Committee? We should think so. But this does not suit Maister Syme. It has been determined in Raleigh—and we might as well inform the Elizabeth City Sentinel, the Greensborough Patriot, and the Asheville Spectator of the fact—that Mr. McRae, who claims to be a Democrat,—is to be the Know Nothing candidate for Governor—in other words, that the opposition forces are to rally to his flag. Maister Syme has had an important agency in producing this determination. He has set his heart upon it, and he has resolved not to be thwarted in the movement. He thinks it best to act thus, and he will hear no counsel, no suggestions, no reproof to the contrary. He is the committee, and everything else in this matter. The Patriot, the Spectator and the Sentinel will please, therefore, govern themselves accordingly.

The Register is also denouncing in advance those "Americans" and old line Whigs who refuse to be transferred, under its orders, to the support of Mr. McRae. It says:

"We hear that some of those who for the sake of principle are unwilling to vote for a Distribution Democrat for the office of Governor of this State, will, in the event they cannot get a Whig and American candidate to consent to submit himself to an awful defeat, as the reward for a troublesome and expensive canvass, vote for an anti-Distribution candidate of the pure Democratic stripe, and holding no principle in common with them. This commentary on the text of "hauling down the flag," and "going over to the beast," is admirable—aye, it is worthy of all praise.

'Consistency, thou art,' &c., &c."
