PAWTUXET CATTLE SHOW, &c.
On Wednesday last was holden at Pawtuxet the third annual Celebration and Exhibition of the Rhode-Island Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry. After the transaction of the business of the election, a procession, consisting of the Society, the invited guests, deputations from other Societies, the Reverend Clergy, Orator, the Hamilton Society, strangers and citizens, moved through the village to the Baptist Meeting-House, where, after Prayers, by the Reverend Mr. Wilson, of this town, the Annual Address was pronounced by the Hon. Asher Robbins, of Newport, a skilful Agriculturist and a ripe Scholar. Not having been present on the occasion, we were denied the pleasure of hearing the Address, which, to borrow the language of the Journal, was a highly appropriate and classical performance. The author, we trust, will consent to its publication, that the results of his experience and acquisitions in Agriculture, may be extensively circulated among the Farmers of our State. The exercises were closed by the singing of a pertinent Ode, written on the occasion, by Mr. Albert G. Greene, of this town.
Of the various exhibitions, we can give at present, no circumstantial account, and as the particulars will shortly be published in an authentic form, we are not disposed to hazard more than a few general remarks.
In stock and mill manufactures, the exhibitions were quite defective, yet some fine animals and creditable cloths were to be seen. Among the most conspicuous articles of shop manufactures, were a secretary of native curled maple, which for beauty was thought to excel imported wood of any kind; several pairs of uncommonly well-made boots and shoes, and a superb set of Blank Books, from the manufactory of Mr. Burnton, besides many other articles highly creditable to the makers.
Among the domestic or household manufactures were several specimens of very handsome carpeting and two or three hearth-rugs, which for beauty of colours and excellence of fabric almost equalled the best of those imported. One or two beautiful specimens of needle work were displayed in several highly-wrought counterpanes. The bonnets, both of straw and grass, the latter in imitation of Leghorn, were extremely beautiful, and the imitation very complete. A trunk of fancy articles, pincushions, &c. displaying great taste and ingenuity,
attracted considerable attention. They were the joint productions of the Female Academy in George-Street, and the proceeds were directed by the fair donors to be applied to the use of the indigent.
Several parcels of very excellent butter and cheese were exhibited—and among the vegetable products were remarked particularly two winter squashes, raised from one seed in the garden of George Olney, Esq. of this town. They are of the following dimensions and weight: First squash (which is straight) 39 inches long, greatest circumference 34 1-2, length of neck 29, average circumference of neck 20, weight 81 1-4 pounds. Second squash, length 37 inches, greatest circumference 31 1-2 inches, length of neck 26; average size of neck 26, weight 53 1-4 pounds.
The skin of the Panther recently killed at Hopkinton, was exhibited for the gratification of the curious. The intrepid lad by whom this ferocious animal was shot, was present, and obtained, in reward of his exploit, both money and praise.
The assemblage of citizens was unusually numerous, especially from Newport and Providence. A considerable number of substantial and respectable farmers, were present, but the absence of several who have heretofore given their valuable countenance to the exhibition, was perceived with regret.
The collection of ladies was unusually brilliant and numerous, amongst which were noticed several from the neighbouring States and the South.
The festive board exhibited the productions of the country and season in their usual abundance and excellence.
The Ploughing Matches and other trials of working Oxen, were had yesterday forenoon. After dinner, the premiums were awarded and paid, and the auction sales of premium articles were made. Particulars will be stated hereafter.
