Full Text

The canvassing for the governor's chair, to be filled on the 2d Tuesday of October next, in Pennsylvania, is carried on between the friends of John Andrew Shulze and Andrew Gregg with a great deal of warmth and animation. They are both democrats, one a patent, the other an old school. The former was nominated by a caucus, held at Harrisburg last winter, during the session of the Legislature--the latter by a convention of Delegates appointed from the different parts of the state, that met in Lewistown on the 2d Thursday in May last. Meetings have been held in different parts of the state, by the friends of each candidate. We have every reason to believe, judging from the general impression, and best information on the subject, that Andrew Gregg will be elected; because John Andrew Shulze is not the regularly nominated candidate. In the year 1818, the citizens of Pennsylvania, entered into a compact, for the purpose of meeting at Lewistown every three years, on the 2d Thursday in May. for the purpose of nominating and appointing a candidate, to be voted for as governor. This compact the caucus at Harrisburg last winter violated. At the caucus there were three principle candidates, to wit: George Bryan, John Andrew Shulze and Samuel D. Ingham--After three unsuccessful ballotings, in which Bryan had a majority over each candidate. each ballot, the meeting was adjourned over to the next day, when, after a night's juggling, Ingham was withdrawn from the nomination, and John Andrew Shulze obtained a majority over Bryan--Bryan's friends have taken sides with those of Andrew Gregg, and little or no doubt remains of the election of Gregg
