A Misrepresentation by the "Republican Senators,"
Editor Democrat: I observe in the Picayune of this morning a card published as an "Explanation from the Republican Senators to the Public," wherein there is one statement which I know to be untrue in fact. The above Senators instance, among other bills passed by the Senate and not acted upon in the House, "A New Charter for the City of New Orleans, submitted by the Property-Holders' Union" No charter was submitted by the Union to the Senate; that presented to some Republican Senators was withdrawn on information being given that it contained features highly objectionable to the Republican majority, and could not pass. Now, as the objectionable clauses were the most essential as the means of reducing taxation, the committee in charge withdrew it, and reported their action to the Central Council, which never again authorized the committee to present a charter; hence the document referred to in the card, so far as it relates to the Property-Holders' Union, is spurious.
It may be proper to mention that the charter as presented by the Union to some of the Republican Senators and rejected, was drawn up by a well-known Republican of this city
