We hear from Philadelphia, that the gentlemen who have, for some months past, entertained that City with Lectures, elegant Scenery, Machinery, Dancing, Vocal Music and Pantomime, after performing to universal approbation, and presenting an hundred pounds out of the receipt to their Poor-House, lately closed the season, and propose to bring out their exhibitions, during the summer, in several of the Northern States, they were favoured with very crowded audiences, owing to the great and immensely pleasing variety of which their Pasticcios consisted. The gentlemen performed under the patronage of the first personages in the Delaware State, and they were constantly honored with a brilliant appearance of ladies.----The following MONODY, a production of a young gentleman, and made a part of the performance, was always received at Philadelphia with unexampled applause :
SCENE.
An ancient aisle filled with a variety of Monuments and other pieces of Sculpture, presenting in the front of the Scene, two transparent Pillars, ornamented with variegated Foliage, and terminating in an Urn. On the Base of one pillar is written, "SACRED To HONOR," and winding round it appear the Name of "WOOSTER, MERCER, MONTGOMERY, &c." On the Base of the other pillar is written, "SACRED To UNION," and winding round it appear, "AMERICA, FRANCE, &c." The GENIUS of AMERICA is discovered at a distance, accompanying with her Voice the distinct periods of the Monody :
DARK as the night, which now in dunniest robe,
Ascends her zenith o'er the silent globe,
Sad melancholy wakes. a while to tread
With solemn step, the mansions of the dead!
Led by her hand. o'er this illustrious shrine
I sorrowing bend, and here essay to twine
The tributary wreath of laureate bloom,
With artless hands to deck the warriors tomb!
The precious tomb! where teeming sorrow weeps,
Where hoary honor constant vigil keeps,
And grateful liberty still loves the shade,
Her guardian chiefs, where soft'ring virtue laid
Oh! dear bought freedom! if thy holy flame
Burns in our souls, nor rests an empty name;
If for thy sake the kindling warmth we feel.
Unwarn'd by selfish views or party zeal,
Thy active precepts teach us how to trace;
To mark the soldier's fire, the patriots grace!
While WARREN and MONTGOMERY spread the fame,
And MERCER's track explores the source Of fame,
Give us like them. t'assert the injur'd laws:
The bliss of dying in our country's cause!
AIR.
"Thus when the brave, the gen'rous and the just.
"Or god like patriots sink to silent dust,
"The muses tears embalm their glorious retire'd'
"And bid the turf lie lightly on their breast!
Is there a chief who urg'd the arduous strife
For liberty, thou dearer boon than life!
Is there a heart to sense and virtue form'd.
By merit soften'd and by passion warm'd.
That seeks not here to add one leaf of fame.
And emulate the glorious patriot's name?
Sure ev'ry muse and ev'ry grace will join
With votive hands the fairest wreath to twine!
Recording history the tale shall tell
Of chiefs that conquer'd or of chiefs that fell,
To distant ages shall a theme supply,
And with glistening tear fill beauty's eye!
AIR.
"Humanity! thy awful sound
"Shall ever reach our ear,
"Sonorous, sweet and clear!"
So when revealing time shall sanctify the name;
And WASHINGTON, great favourite of fame!
By some enraptur'd bard recall'd to view,
In sons unborn your feelings shall renew,
Virtue with joy shall chaunt his hallow'd name
And give a wreath, beyond the pow'r of fame!
While the rich story of his life is told.
His courage charms the young, his worth the old
His martial feats the veteran admires;
The patriot bosom glows, as he retires!
And all mankind, in admiration lost.
Strive who can follow or applaud him most!
AIR.
"Scatter here the laurel crown,
"Emblem of immortal praise!
"Wond'rous chief to thy renown,
"Future times shall altars raise"
Superfluous then, o'er such respected dust,
To heap the graven pile, or laurel'd bust,
Since ev'ry heart a monument supplies
Of well prov'd gratitude that never dies,
But hand in hand with time shall fondly soar.
And last till nature is herself no more!
AIR.
"Sweet swell your notes, immortals raise your song!
Your purple pinions wave and bear the sounds along!
"Behold the grateful tablet fix'd on high,
Midst the dread records of eternity!"
