MORE THAN THIRTY CRACK PILOTS WILL TRY FOR ANNUAL FLORIDA CHAMPIONSHIP
(Special to The Citizen)
MIAMI, Dec. 31.—Miami's Flagler Speedway Park, home of the midget auto races, throws wide the gates this Sunday night to welcome the New Year with one of the greatest programs of midget auto races in the history of the sport.
On Sunday, January 5, more than thirty of the nation's outstanding pilots will soar around the asphalt surface in quest of the second annual Florida State Championship. Feature of the meeting will be the titular sixty lap trophy race, with the champion receiving the Pinky Wagner Trophy plus the usual honors which naturally go to a champion athlete.
The field for the coveted trophy race is wide open. Pre-race favorite will be Harry Sheeler, who is the number one among the Flagler entourage for the current season, and who consequently will draw the favored post position for the sixty lap grind. However, Sheeler's path to glory will be strewn with thorns.
Vying for the top spot will be such ace leadfoots as George Fonder, Harry Hart, Charlie Breslin, Roscoe Hough, Rex Records, Paul Jones, Red Keel, Ted Hartley, Elmer Sefcik, Len Golen and hosts more. All of the above have performed sensationally this season at the Flagler oval.
Thus this Sunday should be one of the biggest events in the lives of all the pilots competing in South Florida. And the race itself promises to be equally as tense, tight and terrific. In seven feature races held so far, five have been captured by different pilots, while of forty races contested, twenty-five have gone to separate stars.
The Flagler Speedway has been dark the past two weeks to enable the drivers to spend the holidays with their families. In the meantime, Manager Santo has been active in preparing for the coming championship meet and generally clearing the way for the ambitious program of races on deck for the duration of the current Miami "season".
From here on in, races will be held at the Flagler track every Wednesday and Sunday evenings, starting at 8:30 o'clock.
