Newbern, June 8. A correspondent wants to know, how long the wise men of America will suffer fools to guide the national helm? He observes, that we have a wise Congress, is not doubted, but they cannot guide the helm for want of necessary power, which is withheld by a certain small number of designing men, who are pursuing selfish plans of the ruin of national prosperity: It is equally shameful and astonishing, that America, after conquering all her enemies, establishing a glorious peace, and, possessing every natural advantage for the increase of commerce and wealth, should, by withholding the necessary powers to Congress, languish in disjointed poverty, and thereby invite the insults of all the rascals in creation. Such inconsistent, unnational conduct, demonstrates the want and necessity of a MASTER; and if much longer persisted in will produce ONE. Then will the people know to their everlasting sorrow, that the taxes to support a MASTER, will be fourfold the expense of maintaining LIBERTY; --but as they will merit the cure, let them bear it without a murmur. If they have not virtue to be freemen, let them be slaves, and lick the dust of a tyrant's foot. The contracted, selfish, jealous spirit, which influences some State Councils, leads to national poverty and humiliation, and despotic power. One long period Rhode-Island was the evil genius of America; She repented and came in. Now, and for many months past, New-York is the political curse of the Union.

A correspondent questions how long wise men will allow fools to guide the nation, noting Congress lacks power withheld by designing men pursuing selfish plans. America, post-victory and peace, languishes in poverty due to this, inviting insults. Such conduct necessitates a master, leading to heavier taxes than liberty's cost. Lacking virtue for freedom invites slavery. Selfish state councils cause poverty and despotism. Rhode-Island was once America's evil genius but repented; now New-York is the political curse.
