Democratic Tool.—The Trenton Federalist, in republishing a number of Toasts, given at South Amboy (N. J.) by a company of "pure republicans," has, among others, the following, with its annexed comment.—Boston Gaz.
"3. John Adams, Arnold and Jay—May they skulk from door to door for subsistence, as Hannibal the Carthagenian general did, after having been overthrown, and totally defeated by the Roman Republic."
Passing by the ignorant folly of a wish that Arnold, who has been a long time dead, should beg for subsistence—Passing by the unmanly affront of coupling his name with the venerable names of Adams and Jay, what bosom worthy to be called American, but must swell with indignation at so base an insult offered, on a day dedicated to the celebration of our independence, to two men who did more to achieve it than any two living characters, as memory now and history hereafter, fully evince; Adams and Jay have grown old in the service of their country, and now their ungrateful countrymen would deprive them of their moderate competence and drive them forth, as outcasts of society to beg their bread—The common boon of the miserable poor, the stated pittance of the wealthy should be denied them, could the wish of democrats, of men unbounded in their professions of wisdom be effected, the great revolutionary characters, covered with grey hairs, should be forced to skulk from door to door for subsistence! Let it be remembered that these men declare themselves to be "pure republicans."
