NEW ORLEANS—"Of all the forms of transportation in the country, only the railroads pay their own way," declared Mayor deLesseps Morrison at the recent dedication of New Orleans' new $20 million passenger terminal.
"Great passenger terminals are built for the airlines, but they are paid for out of taxes. By contrast the Union Passenger Terminal will be paid for, not by the government, but by the railroads of New Orleans," he said.
Commenting on the new terminal, Wayne A. Johnston, president of Illinois Central Railroad, which is a major user of the new terminal and will pay approximately one-third of its cost, said in the May issue of an IC publication, THINGS TO TALK ABOUT:
"Taxpayers in New Orleans will not have to pay a single penny toward the cost of the new terminal, including the station, tracks, yards, engine facilities, signal and interlocking systems, express buildings and other facilities.
"The revenue bonds which the city issued to build the terminal will be retired with interest through rentals paid by the railroads. By contrast, airlines use terminals that are bought and paid for out of public funds."
