The Political Elephant.

In an old work of great celebrity. it is wisely said, that " a Member of the Great Council, or Legislature of a State, should have three properties of an Elephant. First---" He should have no gall," that is he should be without malice, rancour, heat and envy. In elephante melancholia transit in nutrimentum corporis. Secondly--" He should be inflexible, and not be bowed,"---that is, he should be constant, upright, and not to be turned from the right, either from fear, reward, or favor ; nor in judgment respect any person or party." Thirdly---" He should be of a ripe and perfect memory, that he, remembering perils past may prevent dangers to come."
