Full Text
Somewhat Curious.—C. W. White, Esq., while making a survey in the upper portion of this county, had occasion to run a line toward a certain "corner" tree. The tree supposed to be the correct one was found, but the proper mark was not upon it. Mr. White, however, bade the axemen cut into the tree, and accordingly he did so. About six inches from the outer surface were found the figures, 4022, large, well-formed, and perfectly distinct. These figures were placed there seventy odd years ago, upon what was then the outer bark of the tree, by some one, who, at that time, made the survey which Mr. White was now running over. After this mark was put on, the bark closed over it—sinking in and filling up the incisions in such a manner, that when two or three of the chips were placed together forming a block ten inches in length, there were found on this block—in raised lines and in a reversed position, the figures, 4022.—When placed before a looking-glass they resumed their original position. The tree is a large white oak.
