The Editor of the Watchman of the South was compelled to leave home before this sheet went to press. The length of his absence will depend on the time occupied in the lawsuit, which he goes to attend. He feels assured that his patrons will not complain of this necessary attendance on a prosecution on which good and wise men must look with sorrow, and which is in its nature altogether scandalous to the plaintiffs. But having sued and having refused the most liberal offers for conciliation, the New School party seem desperate in their conduct and are plunging on in floundering recklessness. We go in the name of the Lord to unite with the fathers and brethren to do what conscience and honor and decency seem to require in defending the interests of our Zion. We go cheerfully. We believe Jehovah will hear the ten thousand prayers offered to him in the name of the great Mediator. He loves Zion. He will guide and guard her. Let prayer be continually offered unto God until this trial is over. "He that humbleth himself shall be exalted." It is affecting indeed to see such venerable men as some of the fathers of our church taken hundreds of miles at this inclement season of the year, to see the church of God arraigned at a bar, from which it is the avowed purpose of the prosecutors to exclude every man (so far as they have power) who has any such regard for religion as is implied in the profession of evangelical piety. But far worse things have come on the Israel of God. No strange thing hath now happened. In the Rock of our salvation we will shout and sing and trust.
