Full Text

It will be seen that Mr. Webster has called for information as to the fact of any instructions having been given to Mr. Bancroft to propose to the British Government a reciprocal opening of the coasting trade of the two countries to the commercial marine of both. We have not a very high opinion of Mr. Bancroft as a man, a politician, or a diplomatist—but we incline to think there is some mistake in the newspaper rumor. We cannot believe that, of his own accord, he would have made such a proposition, nor do we think it probable instructions to that effect have been given by the late administration. As Mr. Webster's resolution was adopted, a few days will bring forth the facts of the case.
