WASHINGTON, July 20.—The President to-day made the following appointments:
M. M. Hurley, of Indiana, to be Third Auditor of the Treasury.
J. H. Franklin, of Kansas, to be Deputy Second Auditor of the Treasury.
John Fehrenbach, of Ohio, to be supervising inspector of steam vessels for the Seventh district (Cincinnati).
Charles M. Leavy, of California, to be appraiser of merchandise in the district of San Francisco, Cal.
To be Collector of Customs—Franklin B. Gross, of Massachusetts, for the district of Barnstable, Mass.; Wm. Gaston Henderson, of Mississippi, for the district of Pearl river, Miss.; N. Wright Cuney, of Texas, for the district of Galveston, Tex.; Henry B. Clay, of Virginia, for the district of Newport News, Va.
To be collectors of internal revenue—James E. Brady, of Virginia, for the Second district of Virginia; P. H. McCaull, of Virginia, for the Eighth district of Virginia; Jos. W. Burke, of Texas, for the Third district of Texas.
James J. Pickerson, of Texas, to be marshal of the United States for the Eastern district of Texas.
Milton C. Elstner, of Louisiana, to be attorney of the United States for the Western district of Louisiana.
To be consuls of the United States—Evans Blake, of Illinois, at Crefeld; Henry C. Fisk, of Vermont, at St. Johns, Que.; Jasper P. Bradley, of West Virginia, at Southampton; Eugene O. Fechet, of Michigan, at Piedras Negras, Mex.; Archibald J. Sampson, of Colorado, at Presidio del Norte; Horace E. Pugh, of Indiana, at New Castle, Eng.
Mr. George K. Holmes, of Great Barrington, Mass., has been appointed by Ind. Superintendent of Census as a special agent to assist in the collection of the statistics of recorded indebtedness and his preliminary work in the South.
Massachusetts. Mr. Holmes has been a newspaper writer for many years, and is also a student of social and economic questions.
