MAKING HEADWAY

Burlington and Northwestern Surveys Through Big Horn Basin Nearing Completion

The following from the Thermopolis Record gives account of the progress of the Burlington railroad survey through the Owl Creek canyon and the Big Horn valley:

Work on the Burlington & Missouri survey through the canyon has been completed and the engineers have taken up operations on other portions of the line.

We can now make the definite statement that the line keeps on the west side of the river through the entire length of the gorge. The engineers found the line not difficult excepting about two miles at the upper end and two miles just out of the canyon proper.

In proof of the statement that this piece of road is not as rough as many supposed, we may mention the fact that engineer Hoagland walked the entire twelve miles and return in one day.

After leaving the canyon he located the line twenty miles south, nearly to the big bend of Wind river. His orders carried him only to that point. From there he returned to Thermopolis, arriving in town with his crew this evening. They will establish their camp about ten miles down the river tomorrow and will take up the work of locating the line here, running north. Mr. Hoagland treated the Record representative very courteously, but could give out no information that could in any way be constructed to indicate what the plans of the company may be.

Engineer H. Deyo and his men returned from the work in their section of the canyon yesterday and pulled out this morning for the north. They will go to a point in the vicinity of Lovell, the route from Frannie to that place having already been established, and will work this way to meet Mr. Hoagland. It goes as a matter of course that the line from here will follow the Big Horn valley for the first sixty miles, but from there on it remains to be seen which course they will take.

Although the engineers would give no satisfactory answer to the question as to what they considered the most probable course, the impression was left that unless too many obstacles are encountered they prefer to follow the course of the river. If they decide in this route, Basin will be on the line—a thing that all the friends of that town earnestly hope for.
