A statement is in circulation to the effect that, a son of the late Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Ewing, received a very large and extravagant sum of money in payment for negotiating a portion of the Public Loan.
In contradicting this charge, we are authorized to state that, the amount of loan effected by Mr. P. B. Ewing, was half a million of dollars, for which he was paid by the Treasury Department one twelfth of one per cent. The whole amount received by him therefore, in payment of his services, dwindles down to $416 66. This is the sum which has been very unjustly magnified into thousands.
