Full Text

Upon the examination of Mr. Glover before the House of Commons, about five years since, in relation to the American trade, he computed the whole power of the English navy in comparison with the rest of Europe as one fifth; more than two parts of which he said we owed to the colonies. He was then laughed at by the tools of the Minister, but the event has proved the truth of his calculation. Without American sailors and American stores, what a wretched figure did France make in the late war? And how much better are their ships now worked, manned, and manoeuvred since the separation of North America from Great Britain? Mr. Glover at the same time assured the House of Commons, that the quarrel with the colonies (which was then in its infancy) had given a wound to the commerce of Great Britain as would never be healed. This too was laughed at by the same worthy associates of our most able Minister. Ask our merchants and eminent traders their opinion; they will tell you, that Mr. Glover spoke from knowledge and sagacious foresight; and that those who scorned to listen to his advice, were either idiots or enemies to their country.
