The lecture by Prof. S. K. Smith of Colby University, in the Baptist church in this city, Tuesday evening, on the subject of "Eloquence," was a profound and masterly effort. Although suffering from a temporary throat affection, which made the exercises somewhat unpleasant to the speaker, the audience was interested and impressed with the force of the speaker's arguments, his logic and illustrations, his clear definition of the characteristics of a true orator, and the portrayal of what constitutes true eloquence--showing that, unperverted, it is a noble gift, a mighty moral power, which could be wielded for the elevation of the masses, bringing them up to a higher plane of thought and action. Not a single point bearing upon the subject in hand was omitted, not a single objection to the right exercise of the magical power of eloquence was left unrefuted. The Professor has the thanks of his audience for his contribution to their evening's enjoyment and gratification.
